How to Calculate What You Need for an Aluminium Pool Fence (2450mm Panels)

Planning a new aluminium pool fence? One of the most common questions we get is:

“How many panels, posts, brackets, gates, hinges, and latches do I need?”

Let’s break it down step by step so you can confidently plan your fencing layout using 2450mm wide aluminium flat top panels.

Step 1: Measure Your Fence Layout

Start by measuring each straight section (or “side”) of your fence in metres. Note down the length of each side, and be sure to account for any gates or changes in direction (e.g. corners).

Tip: It’s easiest to draw a quick sketch with all measurements and planned gates.

Step 2: Calculate the Number of Panels

Each standard panel is 2450mm wide (or 2.45 metres).

To calculate how many panels you need per side:

Side Length (m) ÷ 2.45 = Number of Panels

Always round up to the nearest whole number (panels can be cut down to fit shorter gaps).

Panels are cuttable, so don’t stress if the last section on a side is shorter — just trim a panel to suit.

Step 3: Calculate the Number of Posts

You need:

  • 1 post at each end of a fence side
  • 1 post between each panel
  • +2 posts per gate

For example, if a side needs 4 panels, it will need 5 posts (4 gaps = 5 ends).

If multiple fence sides meet at corners, corner posts are shared, so subtract 1 post per shared corner.

Step 4: Calculate Brackets

Each panel uses 2 brackets per end (4 per panel total), so:

Brackets = Number of Panels × 4

If you're using wall brackets or different mounting styles (e.g. on a building or post), you may need fewer.

Step 5: Add Gates, Hinges & Latches

Each gate requires:

  • 1 Gate Panel
  • 2 Posts (or 1 post and 1 wall/fence connection)
  • 2 Hinges (order as 1 pair)
  • 1 Latch

So:

  • Gates = however many you plan to install
  • Hinges = Gates × 2 (order as 1 pair)
  • Latches = Gates × 1

Example Layout

Let’s say your fence layout is:

  • Side 1: 6.2m
  • Side 2: 8.4m
  • 1 gate

Panels

  • Side 1: 6.2 ÷ 2.45 = 3 panels
  • Side 2: 8.4 ÷ 2.45 = 4 panels
  • Total: 7 panels

Posts

  • Side 1: 3 panels = 4 posts
  • Side 2: 4 panels = 5 posts
  • +1 post shared at corner = subtract 1
  • +2 posts for the gate
  • Total: 10 posts

Brackets

  • 7 panels × 4 = 28 brackets (when ordering in 4 packs you will need 7 packs)

Gate Hardware

  • 1 Gate
  • 2 Hinges (order as 1 pair of hinges)
  • 1 Latch

Recap – Quick Reference

ItemHow to Calculate
Panels Total length ÷ 2.45 (round up)
Posts Panels + 1 per side, minus shared corners, +2 per gate
Brackets Panels × 4 (or 1 x 4 pack per panel)
Gates As needed
Hinges Gates × 2 (or 1 x Pair of hinges)
Latches Gates × 1
